Interesting things you may not have known about

David Blaine

...

1. Full Name - The performer’s full name is said to be David Blaine White. This may be based upon the assumption he went under his mother’s last name as a child, Patrice White.

2. Birthday – David Blaine was born on April 04, 1973 in Brooklyn, New York. He is currently 35 years old.

3. David Blaine unfortunately never knew his biological father. Instead, his mother remarried to a banker named John Bukalo. This accepted, loving marriage brought forth Blaine’s half brother, Michael.

4. Blaine’s first effect is said to be the Cigarette Through Card. His mother purchased it for him at a Disney magic shop in Florida, while visiting an aunt for the Summer.

5. As a teenager, Blaine created the eccentric character the public most commonly sees in him. Intrigued by acting and theatre, he always strived to be the center of attention.

6. As a teenager, Blaine already appeared on several commercials and soap operas on daytime television.

7. David Blaine currently has three DVD’s out on the international market and a best selling book. In the UK, Blaine has produced Mystifier and Showman—a compilation of his first three national television specials: Street Magic; Magic Man; Frozen in Time. In the US, Blaine featured all three specials on a single DVD entitled Fearless. There are currently two different versions of his book, Mysterious Stranger, which apparently leads the path to a buried treasure in the USA through codes and hidden symbols.

8. Blaine has been said to date some of the hottest names in the business: Fiona Apple, Madonna, and Josie Maran just to name a few.

9. Blaine is known to have created solid friendships with Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, and other major actors, using his magic.

10. David Blaine looks up to several magicians for their support and company throughout his productions. One of which is Paul Harris, a respectable icon in the magic community who currently walks all throughout the USA, searching for the meanings of astonishment. Ever since his home burned down with all his belongings, Harris has lived out an extreme life of which Blaine attempts to convey throughout the specials. Harris actually aided Blaine in creating the “urban shaman” approach to connect with total strangers—Blaine talks of Harris in his critically acclaimed book, “Mysterious Stranger.”

"There are 52 cards in a deck....Choose one"

DAVID BLAINE TRICKS performed on Dive of Death:

  • Blaine drew three Xs in a triangle on a man's hand, then placed a quarter between all three. One by one, he wiped the Xs off, then picked up the quarter... all three Xs were underneath.
  • Blaine had a spectator choose and sign a card. Another man shuffled the deck. Blaine sprang the cards out, then threw a dart. The selected card was on the dart.
  • Blaine had random spectators call out random numbers. He then pulled out a lottery ticket with each of the chosen numbers.
  • Blaine had a man take a cell phone picture of another man, then struck an outstretched dollar bill with the phone. The second man's face appeared on the bill, in place of Washington's face.
  • Blaine had a man drain a glass bottle. Blaine took the cap, slapped it on the bottom of the bottle... and the cap jumped inside the bottle. He then had another spectator hold his hands near the bottom of the bottle, which drops off by itself. If you liked this effect, check out Bullet and Factory Sealed.
  • Blaine took a signed dollar bill, ripped an end off and ate it. Then, he blew on the ripped dollar bill and restored the eaten part -- on the wrong end.
  • Blaine set up four cellphones circling a plate. He had the owners of the phones call the other phones, then put a quarter on the plate. The quarter started dancing, shaking and vibrating.
  • Blaine had actor Orlando Bloom choose a card from a pile of 10 cards while holding a pile of 10 more cards behind him. Bloom thought of a card from the original pile, which then appeared in the pile hiding behind his back. This effect is one of Blaine's favorites. It's called Strange Travelers.
  • Blaine had a girl think of a card, cut the deck, then flip over half of it. The chosen named card was on the top of the flipped half.
  • Blaine made a little piece of paper jump from his hand to a little girl's hand.
  • Blaine called for a butterfly, which appeared out of nowhere and landed on his finger.
  • Blaine had a spectator sign a quarter, then hold it in a closed fist. After everyone in the crowd touched her hand, the quarter bent. A version of this is known as the Superman Coin Bend.
  • Blaine did some classic card magic for the New York Giants, including an ambitious card routine. Most of what he did can be learned from Crash Course in Card Magic volumes 1 and 2. CC2 teaches the ambitious card routine -- a classic in card magic -- and several enhancements to it.
  • Blaine had a man choose one card, sign it then hold it in his hands. Blaine had another man name a card at random, then light a match and burn it under the first card. The card changed to the second. The first card? It was the matchbook.
  • Blaine had a woman choose a card sign it, then put it back in the deck. Blaine had another woman choose a different suit. He held the deck in his hand, which visibly melted away, leaving only the chosen suit and the signed card. He did the same effect for John Mayer, who said it was done with pulleys.
  • This one wasn't magic, but impressive as all getout: He took not one, but two shots in the gut from mixed martial arts fighter Kimbo Slice. OUCH.
  • Blaine took a borrowed quarter, then stretched it like it was Silly Putty.
  • Blaine had Serena Williams choose a favorite card and hold on to it. Her mother then chose a card at random. Written on Serena's card was a prediction of what card her mother would take.
  • Blaine took a signed, borrowed dollar bill, then moved a seal from one side of the bill to the other. John Mayer didn't have anything to say this time... he was gobsmacked. Blaine just committed Fraud.
  • Blaine did the matchbook trick again (see above)for residents of New Orleans' Ninth Ward. He changed five $1 bills into $100s with just a twist of the bills. He then passed them out. An outstanding, charitable Extreme Burn.

FROM THE ELLUSIONIST BLOG:

David hangs like a bat out of hell

Blaine begins bat-like berth

And so it begins.

UPI reports that David Blaine began his latest stunt this morning. According to Blaine's Web site, he was to start at 8:30 a.m. EST.

The Gossip Girls caugh David Blaine hanging around with Kelly Ripa, of Live with Regis and Kelly this morning, but both of them appeared to be harnessed on a trapeze swing. So there are no images of Blaine's electromagnetic boots yet.

Blaine finds a blonde bat on the roof...Doctors: Blaine's head won't explode, but...

As it turns out, hanging upside down has some health benefits, according to information in this NewYork Daily News story. Rosie O'Donnell does it to treat depression. Dan Brown does it to inspire plot lines. Richard Gere did it in "American Gigolo."

But is 60 consecutive hours healthy? Not so much, say doctors.

"His head is not going to explode, but it could cause some problems with the blood flow to his brain," said Washington doctor Michael Friedman. "I wouldn't do it, and I wouldn't counsel anyone else to do it."

Even health professionals who tout inversion therapy don't recommend it for that long. Most people have difficulty with 15 minutes, said inversion therapist Anthony Cardenas in the story, and the longest he goes is 30 minutes at a 45-degree angle.

Blaine begins his 60-hour hang on Sept. 22. The conclusion will be aired during "David Blaine: Dive of Death," at 9 p.m. EST Wednesday, Sept. 24, on ABC.

'David Blaine: Dive of Death' inspired by ceiling dancers; hidden anagrams in names?

I doubt he's talking about Lionel Richie.

David Blaine told The National Ledger that his inspiration for his upcoming special, "David Blaine: Dive of Death," was inspired by turn-of-the-century ceiling dancers, who would dance on a ceiling ages ago.

His intense training for living upside-down has consisted of building up his endurance by developing a resistance to it. By Sept. 16, he had done about 60 cumulative hours of upside-down training.

"What was even more interesting to me is how your whole perspective on the world changes when you're upside down. You kind of feel giddy in a weird way."

In the article, Blaine confirms something that we've known for a while: He'll be doing more street magic in an attempt to get back to his "roots."

"It's a show filled with magic -- more magic than I've put on any show in 10 years. I'm really proud of it."

Back to the training: The first few days were chronicled in this London Telegraph story, which has been mentioned on quite a few magic sites and forums. My only frustration with this story is that the Telegraph didn't give the reporter a byline.

That is a tragedy, because it's one of the most descriptive, brilliant, compelling pieces of journalism on Blaine, or anyone, I've seen in a while. Take the time to read it, and post what you think the hidden anagrams are.

Countdown begins for "David Blaine: Dive of Death"

This teaser is out on YouTube, but not yet ABC.com. ABC has this page with more information about the show, but no surprises. Here's what we know about "David Blaine: Dive of Death":

  • David Blaine will hang upside down from a wire, five stories in the air, using a pair of electromagnetic boots, for 60 hours.
  • He will pull himself up only to hydrate himself and restore circulation -- meaning that he'll sleep upside down.
  • His dismount, to occur during Wednesday's special, is a closely guarded secret.
  • The special will feature much more of Blaine's street magic than we have seen in the past.
  • Daniel Garcia, the genius behind Fraud, Fallen, (and a universe of other effects) was one of Blaine's consultants for the show.

Considering all that we do know, this show is going to rock. But what will the ending be?

The show will air at 9 p.m. EST Wednesday, Sept. 24, on the ABC Network. Seven days... let the countdown begin!

David Blaine September stunt released; could finale be bullet catch?

It's official: David Blaine will do something Bruce Wayne never did.

According to a press release from the ABC Network, street magician David Blaine announced exactly how his long-speculated sleep-deprivation stunt will work. According to the release, which was reprinted on The Futon Critic, Blaine will hang upside-down six stories above Central Park for more than 60 hours, with no food. He will pull himself upright only to drink fluids and restore circulation. ABC will air the conclusion of the stunt during "David Blaine: Dive of Death."

To perform the stunt, Blaine will use gadgets that the legendary Batman would appreciate. From the press release:

"Blaine, the 'Upside Down Man,' will attempt to hang from a thin wire five stories in the air with no safety net or airbag to break his fall in Central Park's Wollman Rink for three days and nights. Using electro-magnetic boots, Blaine will walk on and under the wire during more than 60 hours of the challenge."

The big mystery, and the punch of the special, will be how David Blaine, who revived street magic, exits his perch. Current speculation is that Blaine could perform a bullet catch, according to iTricks.

But many magicians, who have been clamoring for more magic and less stunts, will likely be more interested in performances filmed during a cross-country trip. Performing artist Daniel Garcia, one of Blaine's consultants for the special, told iTricks' Justin Robert Young in March that "Dive of Death" will feature more of a focus on Blaine's sleight of hand.

The live, two-hour broadcast will start at 9 p.m. (E.S.T.) Wednesday, Sept. 24.
